KALAMAZOO - Calvin got back on the winning track with a doubleheader sweep at Kalamazoo Monday afternoon, winning 8-0 and 3-1. The Knights are now 14-12 overall and 5-7 in the MIAA.
In game one, Calvin ended the contest by way of the mercy rule as the Knights scored three runs in the top of the sixth to build an 8-0 advantage and then blanked the Hornets in the bottom half to complete the win. The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) that plated sophomore Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) after VanderMeer had singled and stole second.
In the fourth, sophomore Jannelle Agren (Cadillac/Muskegon Community College) walked and then scored on an RBI triple by sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Calvin then erupted for five hits and three runs in the fifth and tacked on three more in the sixth with junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) lacing a two-run RBI triple and freshman Megan Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also connecting on an RBI single.
Avila went all six innings for the Knights to improve to 7-5 on the year while lowering her season earned run average to 2.78.
Calvin had 14 hits in the game one win led by VanderMeer and Rozeveld who were both 3-for-4 at the plate. Brownlee, freshman Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) and Avila all had two hits apiece.
In game two, Calvin took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Agren doubled and later scored on a single by Gildea. Avila later followed with a run-scoring to right-center.
In the fifth, VanderMeer singled, stole second and then third and scored on a squeeze bunt by Brownlee. Kalamazoo added a single run in the top of the sixth but did no further damage.
Junior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon Community College) went all seven innings for Calvin to pick up the win and improve to 4-5 on the year. Calvin had seven hits including three of the extra-base variety. In addition to the double by Agren, Roseveld had a double and sophomore Catherine Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a triple.
Calvin will now prepare for a conference doubleheader at Albion on Wednesday scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
