KALAMAZOO—The Calvin softball team opened its 2011 MIAA campaign with a doubleheader sweep at Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon, winning by scores of 9-1 and 8-0.

In game one, Calvin broke open a 1-1 game with a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and five in the seventh, allowing sophomore pitcher Shelby Mast to gain her first victory of the season. Mast (1-4) was credited with a complete-game victory, striking out 11 and walking just one in seven innings of work. Calvin collected 15 hits in the win led by freshman Shelby Sheehan who was 3-for-3 at the plate with four runs scored. Senior Sass VanRooyen, freshman Lina Avila, sophomore Bekah Kline, sophomore Ashley Oosterink and sophomore Lauren Spoelstra all had multi-hit games.

In game two, Calvin had nine hits including a pair of homeruns - one by sophomore Hannah DeWeerd and the other by Avila. DeWeerd’s homerun was a two-run shot in the second that gave the Knights a 2-0 lead. Avila then hit her team-leading fourth homerun of the spring in the third, belting a two-run shot to left that put the Knights up 4-0. Calvin then scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth and held the Hornets scoreless in the fifth to close out the win.

Sheehan was 2-for-2 with two runs scored while Avila, DeWeerd and Oosterink all had two hits apiece. Freshman Danae Miedema was credited with the complete-game pitching victory, striking out three and scattering six hits.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Adrian in a conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.
