Saturday, April 23, 2011
ALBION - A dramatic two-run eighth inning allowed Calvin to gain a doubleheader split at Albion Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Hannah DeWeerd looped a bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Calvin to a 6-5 game two victory. The win allowed the Knights to salvage a split after falling in Saturday’s opener 3-2. DeWeerd had a bid day at the plate, going 5-for-8 during the twinbill with three runs batted in. In the opener, she belted her third homerun of the spring - a solo shot in the second - that lifted Calvin into a 1-0 lead.
Calvin held the 1-0 lead through four innings before the host Britons (16-14 overall, 6-6 MIAA) tied the game with a run in the fifth and then scored two in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Calvin (6-22 overall) scored a run in the top of the seventh as sophomore Bekah Kline led off with a double and then scored on a two-out single to right by freshman Shelby Sheehan. The Knights could do no further damage however as the Britons held on for the win.
Sophomore Shelby Mast took the loss, striking out five and walking seven.
In game two, Calvin took an early 3-1 lead but Albion stormed back with three runs in the top of the second to take a 4-3 lead. Calvin tied the game 4-4 in the fourth inning as Sheehan collected a two-out single, stole second and scored on a base-hit to right by senior Heather Sanderson. Both teams threatened to score over the next three innings but neither team could scratch across a run, sending the contest into extra-innings.
In the top of the eighth, Albion took a 5-4 lead on a pair of hits including a run-scoring double. In the bottom half of the eighth, freshman Becca Jarvis struck out but reached base as the third strike eluded the Albion catcher. Sheehan then reached base on an error and Sanderson walked, loading the bases with one out. Junior Marie Prins then belted a single to left to score Jarvis with the tying run. Freshman Lina Avila then bounced into a fielder’s choice with Sheehan thrown out at the plate on the play, leaving the bases full with two outs. DeWeerd then looped a single into shallow center, bringing home Sanderson with the game-winning run.
Avila was 2-for-5 for Calvin in the win with a pair of doubles. Sheehan and Sanderson also had a pair of hits while Prins went 3-for-5. Mast (3-11) went all eight innings for Calvin to gain the win, striking out three and walking three.
Calvin will now prepare to host Alma on Monday at 3:30 p.m. in a conference doublehead at the Gainey Athletic Complex
