TUCSON, AZ - Calvin suffered a 4-1 loss to Whitworth college lat Wednesday night in the desert. Whitworth (7-9) scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Calvin (2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, using two Whitworth errors and a sacrifice hit with senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) scoring the first run of the game.

Whitworth tied the game at one on a home run in the bottom of the second. In the fifth, the Pirates used three hits and three walks to score three runs.

Calvin finished the game with seven hits but left seven runners on base. Calvin had three extra-base hits including doubles from sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) and a triple by freshman Kyleigh Fri (Allendale HS).

Freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) took the loss for Calvin, striking out six batters and walking three in six innings of work.

Calvin also defeated Prairie State Community College 4-2 on Wednesday. The game will not count on Calvin’s won-loss record however as it came against a two-year institution.

Calvin is back in action on Thursday when it faces Marian (WI) and Edgewood (WI) in single games.
