TUCSON, AZ - Calvin picked up its second win in as many days with a 3-2 victory over George Fox University Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 2-0 on the season. Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, using an RBI double by junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON) that scored sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and a subsequent RBI single by freshman Aubree Thompson (Grand Rapids Christian HS) that plated VanRooyen.

George Fox tied the game on a two-run homer in the top of the second but the Knights broke the tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth. The winning rally began with a walk by senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS). Miller then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by VandenAkker and proceeded to take third on the play and then scored on a wild throw to third base.

Starting pitcher Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) then made the one-run lead hold up as she picked up her second straight complete-game victory to run her season record to 2-0 on the year. Mast struck out eight batters in the victory while walking only one. She also allowed just four hits.

Earlier in the day, Calvin defeated Ancilla Community College (IL) 7-1. The game will not count on Calvin’s overall record however as it came against a two-year institution. Calvin will take on Prairie State College tomorrow at 4 p.m. and follow with a 6 p.m. contest against Whitworth College.
