Softball Drops Twinbill to Finlandia

Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader with visiting Finlandia University Thursday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex, falling 7-3 and 16-6.
Finlandia (19-9) entered the doubleheader with 19 homeruns to its credit and clubbed four more during the afternoon including three in game two.
In game one, Calvin’s defense committed six errors which led to six unearned runs by the Lions. Calvin matched Finlandia’s hit total with nine as senior Heather Sanderson, sophomore Heather DeWeerd and freshman Lina Avila had two hits apiece. Senior Sass VanRooyen also belted her second homerun of the spring - a solo shot to right in the sixth. Calvin has now hit 17 homers this year.
Sophomore Shelby Mast took the loss, striking out a season-high 10 batters.
In game two, Finlandia rolled out to a 7-1 lead through three innings before the Knights countered with a run in the second and three in the third to close to within 7-5. Sophomore Lauren Spoelstra had an RBI double in the second while freshman Anna Narvaez had an RBI triple in the third. Sophomore Bekah Kline also had a two-run RBI single in the third inning rally.
Finlandia put the game away however with a run in the fourth and eight runs in the fifth. Calvin added a run in the bottom of the fifth but left the bases loaded. Calvin had 10 hits in the loss led by Kline who was 3-for-3 at the plate. Spoelstra also had two hits in game two.
Freshman Danae Miedema took the loss for Calvin in game two, striking out two and walking seven.
Calvin will travel to Naperville, Illinois, on Saturday where it will face Monmouth College in a morning game and host North Central in an afternoon game.
