Softball Drops Pair of Games to Goshen College in Non-Conference Twinbill

Calvin dropped a pair of non-conference games to the visiting Maples Leafs of Goshen College Tuesday afternoon as the Knights were defeated by scores of 2-1 and 2-0. In the opener, Calvin outhit Goshen 9-5 and freshman Shelby Mast struck out seven Goshen batters but the Maple Leafs scored two unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Calvin grabbed an early 1-0 lead with a run in the third on an RBI single by sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS).
Calvin (10-21) stranded 10 baserunners in the contest however including three in the sixth when the Knights loaded the bases with two outs and one in the seventh when Calvin placed a runner on second base with only one out but could not bring the tying run home.
Freshman Ashley Oosterhink (Calvin Christian HS) went 3-for-3 in the loss while Prins and senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) had two hits apiece. Mast (9-17) took the loss for Calvin, going all seven innings.
In game two, managed just two hits against Goshen starter Sierra Van De Keere who struck out nine Calvin batters without a walk. Calvin starter Mandy Johnson (Northpointe Christian HS) had a solid start, giving up only one earned run in four innings of work but suffered the loss to fall to 1-4 on the year. Mast came on in relief and pitched three scoreless innings to lower her season earned run average to 2.39.
Calvin’s hits came from Prins and junior Sass VanRooyen (Beamsville, ON).
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Saint Mary’s for a 3:30 p.m. conference doubleheader.
