Coming off a pair of tough losses to the Flying Dutch of Hope, the Knights looked to regather themselves and possibly pull off an upset against the MIAA-leading Thunder of Trine. Calvin’s upset bid came up short however as the Knights were defeated 10-0 and 9-2.
After a scoreless first in game one, Trine plated two runs in the top of the second to take the 2-0 lead. In the top of the third, Trine pushed its lead to 5-0 on a three-run home run by Tori Cuebas.
Trine continued to build on its lead in the fourth with a two-run RBI triple by Carly Searles. And, in the top of the fifth, the Thunder added three more runs to extend their advantage to 10-0. Holding Calvin to no runs in the bottom of the fifth, Trine took the mercy rule win in game one.
For Calvin, freshman Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) was 2-for-2 in game one while senior Marie Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS), on senior day, was 2-for-3. Sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) took the loss in the circle for the Knights.
The Thunder were led on offense by Cuebas, who was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Searles was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
In game two, after another scoreless first, Trine drew first blood as it brought home seven runs in the bottom of the second. Searles had a two-run RBI double during the second inning while five other hitters all had one RBI.
In the top of the fourth, Calvin scored its first run of the afternoon as a RBI single by freshman Catherine Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) brought Prins home from second base.
Trine responded with a run of its own in bottom of the fourth to push its lead to 8-1.
Each team scored a run in the sixth inning to make the score 9-2 heading into the top of the seventh, Calvin’s last chance to tie the game or take the lead.
A 1-2-3 inning ended the Knights chances, however, and Trine closed off the sweep with the 9-2 win.
The pair of losses dropped the Knights to 11-19 overall and 4-8 in conference while Trine moves to 29-5 and 11-1 in the MIAA.
VanderMeer, Avila, Hilbrands, junior Hannah DeWeerd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), and freshman Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) all recorded a hit in game two for the Knights. Prins scored two runs on two walks for Calvin. Brownlee took the loss in the circle while sophomore Danae Miedema (Jenison/Covenant Christian HS) pitched four innings in relief.
For Trine, Leah Hall, Andi Gasco, Sarah Belote, and Haleigh Daniels all tallied two hits apiece. Hall, Gasco, and Searles each had two RBI in game two.
“We played a tough team, Trine is ranked nationally, we knew it would be tough coming in. They hit the ball pretty well, I’m disappointed we didn’t make the plays we could have made, but they’re a better team overall,” said Head Coach Sharon DeKleine. “We’re looking forward to playing Goshen in a non-league game, get the kinks out so we can play our last two league games.”
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts non-conference opponent Goshen at 3:30 pm.
