HOLLAND - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at rival Hope Wednesday afternoon, falling 5-4 and 6-0.
Calvin used a late rally in game one to tie the game 4-4 and had runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh but could not take the lead. Hope then scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. All five of Hope’s runs in game one were unearned as the Knights committed six errors. Calvin collected seven hits in game one including a two-run homer by freshman Lina Avila in the sixth. The homer was the sixth of the spring for Avila and brought the Knights within a run at 4-3. In the top of the seventh, senior Sass VanRooyen reached base on a double and later scored on an infield error. Sophomore Shelby Mast took the loss for the Knights despite a strong effort as she struck out five and scattered five hits in 6.1 innings of work.
In game two, Hope broke out to quick lead with four runs in the top of the fourth. The Flying Dutch added two more runs in the fifth to close out the scoring. Calvin was limited to three hits including two from sophomore Hannah DeWeerd. Avila took the pitching loss for Calvin with Mast five innings of relief that included three strikeouts without a walk.
Calvin (4-18 overall, 2-4 MIAA) returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Finlandia University in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m.
