Softball Drops a Pair at Goshen College

GOSHEN, IN - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Goshen College Saturday afternoon to fall to 2-10 on the year. In the opener, Goshen broke a 4-4 tie with a five-run sixth, en-route to a 9-4 win. In game two, the host Maple Leafs used a four-run third inning to pull away for the win. Calvin belted three homeruns in the twinbill to boost its season homerun total to nine.
In game one, Calvin jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a first inning RBI single by freshman Lina Avila and a solo homerun in the third by senior Sass VanRooyen. Goshen came back with four unearned runs in the bottom of the third however to take a 4-2 lead. Calvin tied the game in the fifth as Avila led off with a double and then scored on sophomore Bekah Kline’s second home run of the spring that tied the game 4-4. The host Maple Leafs put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on four hits and a walk.
Sophomore Shelby Mast took the loss for Calvin, striking out four and walking two. Calvin had eight hits in the loss with junior Marie Prins, Kline and Avila collecting two hits apiece.
In game two, Goshen took control early, scoring once in the first and four times in the third to build an early 5-0 lead. Calvin’s lone run came in the sixth on a solo home run by Avila - her team-leading third home run of the spring. Calvin had six hits in defeat with sophomore Hannah DeWeerd collecting two hits in three trips to the plate.
Calvin is scheduled to return to action next Tuesday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader. The twinbill will be the MIAA opener for the Knights.
