Softball Concludes Season With Doubleheader Split at Hope - Finishes Sixth in Final League Standings

HOLLAND - Calvin concluded its 2013 campaign with a doubleheader split at Hope Saturday afternoon, dropping the opener 12-7 and coming back to win the nightcap 4-3 in nine innings. The Knights conclude the season with an overall mark of 17-13 and a conference slate of 8-8 - good for sixth place.
In game one, Calvin scored three runs in the top of the first inning with freshman Lydia Gildea driving in one run on a single with junior Lina Avila following with a two-run homer - her sixth of the year and 26th of her career. Hope answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second and another run in the third to tie the game.
In the fourth, Calvin scored two runs on a two-run RBI double by sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) but Hope exploded for nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to build a 12-5 lead. Calvin added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh but did no further damage.
Avila took the loss to fall to 7-6 on the year. Calvin had eight hits with sophomore Christie VanderMeer and Avila picking up two hits apiece.
In game two, Calvin took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning but Hope rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the inning to send the game into extra innings. Calvin broke through for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as it loaded the bases and then scored with one out as freshman Megan Rozeveld was hit by a pitch to force in the winning run.
Sophomore Trista Brownlee went all nine innings for Calvin to earn the win as she struck out four and scattered nine hits.
VanderMeer, Brownlee, Gildea, Rozeveld and freshman Ashley Riemersma all had two hits apiece for the Knights.
