Softball Concludes Season With Doubleheader Loss to Saint Mary’s
Saturday, April 30, 2011
Calvin closed out its 2011 campaign by dropping both ends of a doubleheader to visiting Saint Mary’s Saturday afternoon at the Gainey Athletic Complex. Saint Mary’s took the opener 12-1 and then edged the Knights 2-1 in game two.
In game one, Saint Mary’s blew the game open with a seven-run second inning on the strength of five hits and four walks. Calvin collected five hits and pushed across its only run in the fifth inning on a groundout by junior Marie Prins that plated senior Sass Van Rooyen who had reached base on a leadoff double. Calvin had five hits in the loss including two off the bat of senior Heather Sanderson who ripped a triple to right-center in the third inning. Sophomore Shelby Mast took the loss for the Knights in the pitching circle.
In game two, Saint Mary’s scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Calvin cut the gap in half with a run in the fifth, capitalizing on a pair of Saint Mary’s errors. In the sixth, Prins led off with a single and move to third base with one out. Sophomore Lauren Spoelstra then hit a slow chopper to the pitcher with Prins attempting to score from third on the play. Prins slid under the tag of the Saint Mary’s catcher but was ruled out by the home plate umpire.
Saint Mary’s then then shut down Calvin in order in the seventh to hold off any comeback bid by the Knights.
Mast took the look for Calvin while Callie Selner picked up the win for Saint Mary’s with Monica Palicki credited with the save.
Calvin closes out its season with an overall record of 6-28 and a league mark of 4-10 in conference play. The Knights finish tied for seventh place in the final MIAA standings.
