OLIVET - A four-run rally in the top of the seventh inning allowed the Calvin softball team to claim its first MIAA victory of the season as the Knights claimed a 5-4 win in the opener of a doubleheader at Olivet Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 4-1 heading into the seventh, Calvin (5-5 overall, 1-2 MIAA) rallied with a four-run outburst with all four runs coming with two outs. A one-out double by freshman Kyleigh Fri (Allendale HS) began the rally but a subsequent line-out to first base by freshman Bekah Kline (Rochester, MI) appeared to dampen hopes.
But the Knights kept the rally alive with a triple to right field by sophomore Kim VandenAkker (Grand Rapids Christian HS) that brought home Fri. VandenAkker then scored on a wild pitch to bring the Knights within a run. Senior Whisper Miller (Reed City HS) then walked and moved to second on a single by senior Mandy Johnson (Northpointe christian HS). A single by sophomore Marie Prins (Unity Christian HS) then loaded the bases. Freshman Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) then delivered the clutch hit of the game, ripping a double to left-center that scored two and gave Calvin a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Olivet (8-9 overall, 2-1 MIAA) had the tying runner on second base with one out but Calvin starter Shelby Mast (Hudsonville HS) bore down to strike out the final two batters to complete the Calvin victory. Mast (5-4) struck out nine batters and walked one.
Calvin had 10 hits led by Johnson and Prins with two hits apiece.
The second game was postponed because of rain and will be made up this coming Monday, April 5, at 4:30 p.m.
