ADRIAN - For the second time in three games, Calvin recorded a walk-off win, defeating the host Bulldogs of Adrian 1-0 Tuesday afternoon. Calvin concludes the season with four wins in its last six games including two wins over teams (Adrian and Alma) headed to the four-team MIAA Tournament later this week.
In its win over Adrian Tuesday, Calvin traded goose-eggs with the Bulldogs on the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh. The winning rally began with a lead-off walk by junior Hannah DeWeerd (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with freshman Meghan Smith (Morenci/Morenci HS) coming on to pinch-run. Smith moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Nicole Weener (Zeeland/Holland Christian HS) and two batters later, moved to third on a single to left by freshman Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS). VanderMeer then stepped up and delivered the game-winning hit to right, sending the Knights home to Grand Rapids a winner.
Sophomore Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) tossed the shutout for the Knights, striking out two in seven innings of work. Avila closed out the season 8-10 on the mound.
Senior Marie Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) closed out her Calvin career in style, going 3-for-3 at the plate to finish with a season batting average of .394 and a season hit total of 41. Her average is the highest by a Calvin player since Jeanne Cole batted .425 in 2005. Her hit total is also the highest since Cole collected 51 hits in 2005.
Prins concludes her Calvin career with a four-year batting average of .336 (140-for-417).
