Snapper and Hooker Receive Great Lakes All-Region Honors

Two members of the MIAA champion Calvin men’s soccer team have received Great Lakes All-Region honors as named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Calvin junior Greg Snapper has been named to the to the Great Lakes All-Region second team while Calvin sophomore Scott Hooker has been named to the third team.
Both players are receiving all-region honors for the first time.
A sweeperback on defense, Snapper was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player this fall after anchoring a Calvin defense that allowed only eight goals in 14 league matches.
A native of Madison, Wisconsin (Madison West HS), Snapper has been a three-year starter for the Knights on defense. This fall, he was also named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year and received MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors once. In addition, Snapper was part of a Calvin defense that posted nine shutout victories in 2008.
A forward, Hooker hails from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. This fall, Hooker was named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year.
Hooker led Calvin in scoring this year with 29 points on the strength of nine goals and 11 assists. Of his nine goals, two were game-winners. Hooker was also 2-for-2 on penalty kicks. Both penalty kicks proved to game-winning goals as he booted in a penalty kick in a 1-0 win over Goshen College on August 29 and another penalty kick in a 1-0 win at Ohio Northern on September 20.
Under the direction of head coach Chris Hughes, the Calvin men’s soccer team finished 15-5-1 overall this year and captured the MIAA title with a 12-1-1 conference record. The MIAA title was Calvin’s league-leading 19th crown including its fourth under Hughes. In addition, the Knights advanced to the NCAA III Tournament for the eighth time.
