Tuesday, August 14, 2012
The Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges present the MIAA Team GPA Award every year. This award recognizes conference athletic teams for performance in the classroom of a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale). During the recently completed 2011-12 school year, six of Calvin’s athletic teams achieved this distinction.
Five of Calvin’s women’s teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while the men’s cross country team also achieved the feat. Calvin’s teams receiving the honor are as follows; women’s cross country team, women’s track and field team, women’s basketball team, women’s volleyball team, women’s tennis team, and men’s cross country team.
Under the direction of Brian Diemer, the women’s cross country team topped the list of Calvin teams, earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.667. In addition, they are one of only three teams joining the Hope women’s cross country team and the Albion women’s soccer team as the only teams to receive the award all 14 years it has been presented.
Bret Otte and John Ross had both of their women’s teams receive the award for the eighth straight year. Otte’s women’s track and field team posted an average of 3.561. Ross’s women’s basketball squad posted a grade point average of 3.519. This was the highest average of any women’s basketball team in the MIAA.
Dr. Amber Warners saw her women’s volleyball team honored for tenth time with a grade point average of 3.475. In addition, the women’s tennis team under the direction of Dr. Jerry Bergsma picked up the award for the ninth time, recording a team grade point average of 3.465.
The lone men’s team awarded was Calvin’s cross country team. They did so by earning a grade point average of 3.446.
