Shelby Mast Named to All-MIAA Second Team in Softball

Calvin College freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) has been selected to the All-MIAA second team in softball. A pitcher, Mast had an outstanding freshman campaign for the Knights, appearing in 32 of a possible 35 games and recording an ERA of 2.43. Overall, Mast was 10-18 which included a no-hitter in her season debut on March 22 against Otterbein College.
In conference play, Mast led the MIAA in innings pitched with 88.1 innings. Mast was 5-8 in MIAA play with a 2.85 earned run average. She also recorded a league-leading 76 strikeouts in conference play and recorded one shutout victory. One of her most impressive efforts of the year came in a 1-0 10-inning loss to Albion on April 10. In the loss, Mast went all 10 innings, struck out eight batters and allowed only one hit over the first nine innings.
Overall this spring, Mast struck out 168 batters in 184.1 innings of work. Her strikeout and innings pitched totals were the most by a Calvin pitcher since 1998.
As a team, Calvin finished 11-24 overall and tied for sixth place in the MIAA standings with a 6-10 conference mark. Two of Calvin’s victories came over the final seven days of the season and included wins over MIAA Tournament champion Trine and MIAA Tournament runner-up Adrian.
