Monday, March 03, 2014
Two members of the Calvin women’s diving team competed on the one-meter board at the NCAA III Regional hosted by Denison University in Granville, Ohio, February 28 and March 1.
Those two divers were junior Rebecca Mumby (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) and sophomore Sarah Roth (Brighton/Brighton HS). Friday’s competition for the women began with the three-meter board. Mumby placed 18th with an 11-dive total of 371.25 while Roth was 19th at 369.70. On Saturday, Roth took 18th with a score of 376.00 points while Mumby took 21st with a score of 364.25 points.
Another neither diver advanced to the NCAA III Championships March 19-22, Calvin diving coach Aaron Paskvan praised their performance.
“I thought the level of competition this weekend was extremely high,” said Paskvan. “I think the six divers that did qualify out of our regional will also place very high at the national meet so for our two divers to be down the list a bit does not reflect poorly on them at all. This was the second year that Sarah has qualified for the regional meet and each year she gets better and that is exciting. This was the first time Rebecca qualified and that is also exciting because it will do nothing but motivate her to come back her senior year.”
This is the second year that the NCAA has used an NCAA III Regional competition to determine its diving qualifiers for the national meet. The diving regional at Denison was one of four regional competitions held around the country.
