GRAND RAPIDS - Two Calvin student-athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors in the women’s at-large college division. Juniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named to the all-district first team.

As members of the first team, Oosterhouse and Bressler now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ® consideration.

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Oosterhouse is receiving all-district first team honors for the second straight year. A three-year member of the women’s tennis team, Oosterhouse is preparing to head to the NCAA III singles tournament next week at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

During the 2009-10 season, Oosterhouse has compiled a singles record of 25-1 including 23-0 in dual match play. Earlier this month, Oosterhouse was named to the All-MIAA first team for a third straight year and was also voted the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player. She was also named the recipient of the Sue Little Sportsmanship Award in 2009.

Her efforts this spring helped the Calvin women’s tennis team capture its first MIAA title since 1982 as the Knights finished 19-4 overall and 8-0 in league play, establishing a new Calvin single-season record for victories in the process. Calvin also captured its first MIAA Tournament title since 1982, defeating Alma, Albion and Hope in the tournament to gain its first-ever bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin defeated Baldwin-Wallace 5-0 in a first round NCAA III Tournament match last week and then fell 5-2 to nationally-ranked Washington University 5-2 in the second round. Oosterhouse picked up singles victories in both NCAA III Tournament matches.

In the classroom, Oosterhouse is a biology major with minors in chemistry and Spanish. She carries a 3.92 grade point average and has been a regular member of the Calvin Dean’s List and MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

Bressler is from Sandusky, Ohio. She is a graduate of Perkins High School. Bressler has been a three-year member of the Calvin women’s swimming and diving program and a two-time All-MIAA selection.

At the MIAA Championships this past February, she captured league titles in the 50 freestyle (23.76), 100 backstroke (58.34) and 200 backstroke (2:09.94). She also qualified for the NCAA III Championships in the 100 and 200 backstroke events and in several relays.

She was also a national qualifier for the 2009 NCAA III Championships and picked up All-America honors twice as she was a member of Calvin’s eighth place 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams. She has also been a member of three honorable mention All-America relay teams at Calvin, placing 10th in the 200 medley relay at the 2009 national meet and 12th in 200 medley relay and 16th in the 400 medley relay at the 2010 national meet.

She has also helped the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team capture three MIAA titles and finish seventh at the 2009 NCAA III Championships and 24th at the 2010 NCAA III Championships.

An accounting major, Bressler carries a 3.79 grade point average. She is a five-time member of the Calvin Dean’s List and a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
