Calvin College junior Breanna Verkaik has been named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region third team. She is receiving D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region honors for the first time.

A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik had a break-out season this year, averaging 15.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists-per-game.

She also connected on 82 percent of her free throw attempts, 54.5 percent of her field goal attempts as well as 40 percent of her tries from beyond the three-point arc. She also had 39 steals and 28 blocked shots.

She will carry a nine-game double-figure scoring streak into her senior year. Included in that stretch was a career-high 29 point effort in a February regular season loss to Olivet. Just over a week later in the MIAA Tournament semifinals, she lit up Olivet again, scoring 27 and ripping down a career-high 14 rebounds to lead Calvin to an 80-76 win over the then 18th-ranked Comets.

At the conclusion of the MIAA season, she was named to the all-conference first team. She was also named MIAA Player of the Week once.

The Calvin women’s basketball team finished 19-8 overall and 12-4 in the MIAA which was good for a third place league finish. The Knights then reached the MIAA Tournament finals before falling to Hope to end the season.
