Nicole Michmerhuizen Named Recipient of Prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
Thursday, March 13, 2014
Calvin College senior Nicole Michmerhuizen has added yet another lofty honor to her long list of prestigious accomplishments as a student-athlete.
Michmerhuizen was recently named one of the 58 fall sports recipients of an NCAA Postgraduate scholarship. The scholarships were awarded across all three NCAA divisions.
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Michmerhuizen will receive a one-time, non-renewable scholarship grant of $7,500.00.
Michmerhuizen recently decided to attend the University of Michigan to pursue a Ph.D in pharmacology. While in Ann Arbor, she plans to pursue research in biomedical sciences.
At Calvin, Michmerhuizen has been a Goldwater Scholar where she has been working with biochemistry professor Kumar Sinniah researching a region of DNA associated with a person’s predisposition to developing type 1 diabetes. She holds a double-major of biochemistry and engineering.
“Research is so fascinating to me because there is so much we don’t yet understand about this complex world and our place in it,” said Michmerhuizen in a story on the Calvin News and Stories website last spring, “and I feel so incredibly blessed to be honored in this area that I am also so passionate about.”
Michmerhuizen found out that she was the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship just one day after deciding she would attend the University of Michigan.
“I feel very blessed and honored,” said Michmerhuizen of the award. “To hear the news one day after making such a big decision on my future was also a gentle confirmation that I was being lead down the right road.”
Michmerhuizen spoke of the award one night before she is scheduled to compete at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska. Michmerhuizen is scheduled to compete in the 5,000 meters on Friday and the 3,000 meters on Saturday.
She was the national runner-up in the 5,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships and later captured the national title in the 10,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May.
She is a two-time Capital One Academic All-American, receiving first team honors last spring and a third team selection in 2012.
In cross country, she has been a two-time first team All-MIAA selection and was the MIAA’s Most Valuable Runner in 2012. She has also competed at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships three teams. Her best individual finish came this past November when she placed 48th.
“Our entire coaching staff is extremely proud of Nicole,” said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer who also serves with Al Hoekstra as Calvin’s distance coaches in track and field. “She has very strong values in her life and she works hard to reach her goals both athletically and academically. She has come a long ways as an athlete and she is now at the top of her game. To see her gain achievements at the same level in classroom is also wonderful to see.”
Michmerhuizen is the ninth NCAA Postgraduate Scholar from Calvin and the first since Missy Smith was so honored in 2006.
