More NCAA Provisional Qualifying Marks for Calvin Track & Field Teams

ALLENDALE—The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams posted a pair of NCAA (indoor) provisional qualifying marks Friday night at the Grand Rapids Championshipos hosted by Grand Valley State University.

Both provisional performances came in the women’s competition. Calvin’s first provisional mark came in the women’s shot put as junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) took seventh in the shot put with a provisional mark of 42-8 3/4.

In the distance medley relay, Calvin’s quartet of senior Nicole Farr (Wheaton, IL), junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ), sophomore Kaitlin Diemer (South Christian HS) and senior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) took first place with a provisional qualifying tie of 12:04.18. Calvin’s back-up squad of junior Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore Jordan Gabrielese (Unity Christian HS), junior Kristen Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN) and sophomore Rebecca Hiemstra (Dusseldorf, Germany) took second with a strong time of 12:23.20. Calvin also received wins from senior Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 5,000 meters (18:11.33) and junior Kim Wigboldy (Chandler, AZ) in the long jump (16-10 1/5). Wigboldy was also seventh in the 60 meter hurdles (9.85) and eighth in the 200 meter dash (27.90).

In the pole vault, senior Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA) matched a season’s best with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 11-7 ¾ while sophomore teammate Kelly Veldkamp (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second at 10-8. Sophomore Kelly Peterson (Ramsey, MN) added a second place finish in the triple jump (33-3 ¼).

In the men’s competition, senior Ben Van Wyk (Sussex, NJ) won the 5,000 meter run (15:09.00) while freshman Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL) was second in the mile run (4:17.79).

Senior Caleb Rottman (Fargo, ND) also had a strong meeting, taking third in the 60 meter hurdles (8.72) and fourth in the high jump (6-4 ¾). Senior Zach VanderLaan (Holt, MI) was also fifth in the long jump (19-6 ¾).

Both Calvin teams will compete next Saturday at a meet hosted by Trine University.
