The Knights took a convincing dual match against conference foe Trine, sweeping the doubles flights and winning the five of the six singles flights.
In the doubles portion of the match, the Knights went undefeated in almost uncontested fashion. Jarrod Brower and Vashan Wright, the third doubles team, defeated their Trine counterparts 8-0 and Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson, the second doubles squad, nearly matched their teammates, winning 8-1. Calvin’s first doubles pair of Preston Phillips and Phillip Reinken defeated Trine’s Joe Dunbar and Dan Desper 8-6.
The Knights only dropped point came in the first singles match. Brian DeMaagd battled back against the Thunder’s Joe Dunbar to take the second set 6-4. The two then entered a ten-point tiebreaker. DeMaagd and Dunbar were all square at seven points before Dunbar took the final three points to win the tiebreak 10-7.
Tom Griffin won a hard-fought three-set match by scores of 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Jarrod Brower defeated Nick Ihrie 6-2, 6-1. Loukas Peterson won by almost equally impressive scores of 6-2, 6-2. Phillip Reinken also won in straight sets: 6-4, 6-4. As the number two singles competitor, Preston Phillips found himself in a tight match. Phillips took the first set 7-6(3) and was neck and neck midway through the second set before pulling ahead late to take the set 6-3.
“I thought it was key to win all three doubles flights. It was good to see Tom win a three-set match. We need to keep getting better in tough matches,” said Coach John Ross.
The Knights are now 4-5 overall and square off against Albion on Saturday.
