Men’s Tennis To Face Kalamazoo in Finals of MIAA Tournament

ALBION - For the fourth time in the last five years, the Calvin men’s tennis team has advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals. The Knights advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals with a 6-0 first round win over Adrian and a 5-0 semifinal victory over Hope in the semifinals. Calvin will face top-seeded Kalamazoo in the championship final Saturday at noon with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA III Team Tournament. Calvin is now 16-7 overall heading into Saturday’s title tilt, scheduled to take place at Albion College.
In Calvin’s win over Adrian, Calvin rolled to three straight doubles points and then received wins from senior Roland Eldridge at No. 2 singles, sophomore Preston Phillips at No. 4 singles and freshman Loukas Peterson at No. 5 singles to close out the match.
Calvin then picked up its second victory of the week over rival Hope, defeating the Flying Dutchmen 5-0 in the semifinals. Calvin jumped out to a quick start with a clean sweep in doubles play. Eldridge and Phillips opened the match with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Senior Andrew DeVlieger and sophomore Philip Reinken then won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles followed by DeMaagd and Peterson winning 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.
DeVlieger then picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles with Phillips closing out the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
