Men’s tennis sweeps Oberlin 5-0

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin men’s tennis team finished the MIAA/NCAC Challenge with a 5-0 win over Oberlin on Sat., Apr. 13. Calvin finishes the challenge with a 2-1 record having defeated Ohio Wesleyan and falling to Wabash yesterday.
The Knights won all three doubles flights. Seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) handled Ben turchin (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) and Charlie Marks (Chagrin Falls, OH/Hawken) 8-1 at first doubles.
Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) defeated Soren Zeliger (Bronx, NY/Horace Mann) and Callan Louis (Cambridge, MA/The Rivers School) 8-5 at second doubles.
Senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and junior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) won their third doubles flight, defeating Brandon McKenna (Kamuela, HI/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) and Eliot Heaton (Geneva, NY/Geneva HS) 8-3.
The Knights needed just two singles flights to clinch the match. Calvin won the first two matches off the court. Peterson defeated Zeliger 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles. Calvin sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian) defeated McKenna 6-3, 6-2 at sixth singles.
Calvin returns to MIAA play Apr. 17, when it hosts the Adrian Bulldogs for a 4:00 p.m. match at Strikwerda Tennis Center.
