Men’s tennis falls to Wabash 5-2 in first match of MIAA/NCAC Challenge

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin men’s tennis team faced the Little Giants of Wabash College in its first match of the MIAA/NCAC Challenge hosted by Hope and Calvin. Wabash ended Calvin’s eight-game winning streak, defeating the Knights 5-2.
Calvin fell behind early, winning just one of the two doubles flights. Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) defeated Mark Troiano (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) and Nate Koelper (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran) 8-5 at second doubles.
The Wabash first doubles team of Wade Miller (Crawfordsville, IN/North Montgomery) and Daniel Delgado (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) edged Calvin seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton) 9-7.
Former high school teammates senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and junior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) fell to Ian Leonard (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington North) and Drew Sawyer (Kokomo, IN/Kokomo) 8-6 at third doubles.
Calvin’s lone singles win came at the sixth singles flight. Sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Elmhurst) defeated Sawyer 7-5, 6-1. Phillips took Delgado to three sets, but fell by scores of 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(1).
Calvin squares off against the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan later this afternoon.
