ALBION - Calvin’s run through the MIAA Tournament came to a conclusion Saturday afternoon as the Knights were defeated by defending champion Kalamazoo College 6-0 in the MIAA Tournament final. With the victory, Kalamazoo gains the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin concludes its season with an overall record of 16-8.

In the regular season meeting between the two teams played back at Calvin on April 13, Calvin claimed two of the three doubles points but Kalamazoo was not to be surprised on Saturday as the Hornets ripped off three straight doubles victories, winning 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and 8-5 at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Kalamazoo then closed out the victory with straight set wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

At the conclusion of the tournament, the All-MIAA awards were announced and several Calvin individuals were honored. Senior Andrew DeVlieger (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) was named to the All-MIAA first team while senior Roland Eldridge (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg HS) and sophomore Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) were named to the All-MIAA second team.

DeVlieger went 4-2 in MIAA singles play this spring, playing primarily at No. 1 singles. He was also 5-0 in doubles play in MIAA dual matches. He added a victory at No. 1 singles in the MIAA Tournament semifinals against Hope.

Eldridge was 2-3 in MIAA dual matches playing primarily at No. 2 singles. In doubles, he was 4-1. He then picked up a win in a first round MIAA Tournament match against Adrian.

Phillips meanwhile was undefeated for Calvin in MIAA singles matches, compiling a 5-0 record at No. 4 singles. He teamed with Eldridge to record a 4-1 doubles mark against league opponents and then picked up MIAA Tournament wins against Adrian and Hope. He finished the season with an overall singles record of 14-4 and an 11-match win streak in singles play.

In addition, Eldridge was named the recipient of MIAA’s Allen B. Stowe Memorial Award. The award is a sportsmanship award given each year to an MIAA player in memory of the late Dr. Allen B. Stowe of Kalamazoo College. Eldridge is the ninth individual in Calvin history to receive the prestigious honor and the first since Ricky Tilton was the co-recipient in 2008.
