Men’s Tennis Drops First Two Matches in Orlando

ORLANDO, FL - Calvin dropped its first two matches in Orlando, falling 6-3 to Grinnell College on Monday and 5-4 to Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Tuesday.
In the loss to Grinnell on Monday, Calvin got a win from Brian DeMaagd and Preston Phillips at No.1 doubles but Grinnell took the next two doubles points to grab a 2-1 lead. Phillips then posted a three-set win at No. 4 singles while Jarrod Brower was a three-set winner at No. 6 singles including a 10-8 win a third set tie-breaker.
On Tuesday, Calvin came up just short against the Titans of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Doubles again proved to be pivotal as Wisconsin-Oshkosh claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Calvin’s lone doubles point came at No. 3 doubles as Brower and sophomore John Strikwerda scored an 8-0 triumph.
Singles play featured several nip-and-tuck matches. Phillips was a winner at No. 3 singles, Loukas Peterson a winner at No. 4 singles and Vashan Wright a winner at No. 6 singles. Oshkosh was able to pull out three-set wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles however along with a win at No. 2 singles to gain the one-point win.
Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it faces Hamline University at noon.
