Coming off of an 8-1 win against the Trine Thunder earlier in the week, the Calvin College men’s tennis team played host to the Britons of Albion College Saturday afternoon at Strikwerda Tennis Center. The result proved to be the same, as Calvin knocked off the Britons 8-1 to improve to 5-5 (2-0 MIAA) on the year.
Calvin swept the all three doubles flights. Juniors Preston Phillips and Phil Reinkin defeated David Richter and Tucker Blake 8-3. Brian DeMaagd and Loukas Peterson nipped Danny Frank and Bill Sessions 9-7. Jarrod Brower and Vashan Wright defeated Brandon Kosinski and Steven Nawrocki 8-2.
All the Knights needed to do was win two of the six singles matches. They did this and more winning five of six. Three of these matches, however, were three set matches. DeMaagd and freshmen Tom Griffin won at first and sixth singles despite losing the first set. Phillips lost the lone singles match for Calvin falling to Tucker Blake 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
“Sweeping the doubles was key just as all matches are in this conference,” Calvin head coach John Ross said. “I thought we battled well in the singles matches. It is always exciting to see players come back from a set down to win.”
Calvin returns to action when it travels to Stowe Tennis Stadium to take on the Hornets of Kalamazoo College next Wednesday.
