On an absolutely beautiful March 13 afternoon, the Calvin men’s tennis program swept Cornerstone 9-0 at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts on Calvin’s campus in its first home match of the season.

The Knights opened up the match in doubles play. In first doubles, Brian DeMaagd and Preston Phillips beat John Andrew and Chris Felva 8-1. In the other two doubles matches, Calvin won by scores of 8-2.

In second doubles, it was Phil Reinken and Loukas Peterson of Calvin defeating Josh Webb and Josiah Budger, while John Strikwerda and Jarrod Brower beat Brad Miedema and Alex Tarnow in third doubles.

In the singles matches, it was first singles Brian DeMaagd again beat John Andrew, this time by a score of 7-5,6-0. At second singles, Reinken defeated Felva 6-3,6-1. Phillips beat Tarnow 6-1,6-2 at third singles while Peterson defeated Miedema 6-4,6-2. In fifth singles, and endurance match broke out between Calvin’s Vashan Wright and the Eagles Josiah Budger. Despite losing the first set, Wright was able to outlast Budger 3-6,7-6,10-6. Rounding out the win for Calvin was Brower at sixth singles with a victory over Webb 6-3,6-1.

I thought our guys competed real well for our first match, and Cornerstone’s twentieth match, so I’m really happy with that, said Head Coach John Ross. I’m looking forward to our spring break trip next week with these guys.

The Knights will play Grand Rapids Community College Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. before heading down to Orlando, FL over spring break and training against a number of DIII schools.
