Thursday, April 30, 2009
HOLLAND – For the second consecutive year, the Calvin men’s tennis team has advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals. The Knights advanced to the finals with a 5-0 first round win over Trine on Thursday and then defeated host Hope 5-4 in the semifinals.
Calvin (16-6) will face top-seeded Kalamazoo (14-8) in the MIAA Tournament Championship final at noon at Holland Christian High School. The winner will receive the MIAA’s automatic bid to next week’s NCAA III Tournament.
The victory over Hope (12-10) came in dramatic fashion as the Knights trailed 2-1 after doubles play. The Knights then tied the match 4-4 behind wins from sophomore Matt DeVlieger (No. 3 singles), senior Nick Steenstra (No. 4 singles) and senior Andrew Rescorla (No. 6 singles).
The deciding point came at No. 5 singles with sophomore Andrew DeVlieger defeating Hope’s Scott Jungling. Jungling won the first set (7-6) but then was forced to battle through leg cramps, eventually dropping the second set 6-4 and the third set 6-1.
