Friday, September 18, 2009
SPRINGFIELD, OH—Calvin rolled to its third straight victory with a 3-0 triumph over Otterbein in a first round game of the Wittenberg Invitational Friday night. Ranked 25th in the most recent D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin (4-1-0) outshot an Otterbein team that tied nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday 22-5.
Calvin led 2-0 at halftime on the strength of first half goals from senior Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Kurt Van Sickel (Pittsburgh, PA/Trinity Christian HS). Holwerda scored his goal in the 17th minute of play, receiving a cross from senior Luke Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and banging in a shot just inside the left post. The goal would prove to be Holwerda’s 10th game-winning goal of his Calvin career.
Van Sickel then gave Calvin a 2-0 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half, tapping in a through ball pass from freshman Nick Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS).
Van Sickel continued the scoring in the second half, redirecting a pass from freshman Joe Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) into the Otterbein net with 9:27 left in regulation.
Sophomore Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) went the distance in nets for the Knights, picking up one save in earning his third shutout victory of the year.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces host Wittenberg at 4:30 p.m. Wittenberg defeated Albion 2-0 in Friday’s other first round game.
