Men’s Soccer Stays on Top of MIAA Standings With 5-2 Win at Albion

ALBION – Calvin remained on top of the MIAA standings with a 5-2 victory at Albion Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 7-4-0 overall and more importantly 6-1-0 at the halfway mark of the MIAA regular season. Calvin remains three points ahead of rival Hope heading into a rivalry showdown next Tuesday at Hope’s Van Andel Stadium with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
Calvin trailed early 1-0 but tied the game at one on a goal by junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) late in the first half with freshman David Waterson (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) drawing an assist on the play.
Calvin took a 2-1 lead with just five seconds left in the first half as senior Ben Honeycutt (Grandville/South Christian HS) slammed home a feed from Vegter,
Albion tied the game 2-2 with a goal in the 62nd minute but the Knights responded with three unanswered goals in the final 16 minutes of play. Junior Reed Bowden (Uxbridge, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) put the Knights up 3-2 in the 74th minute on pass from senior Zach Willis (Wyoming/Unity Christian HS).
Vegter then scored his team-leading 15th goal of the game on yet another pass from Waterson with this goal coming in the 81st minute. Sophomore Sam Hanover (St. Johns/St. Johns HS) completed the scoring with a goal with 17 seconds left in regulation.
Junior Andrew Claucherty (Sterling Heights/Bisoph Foley HS) had five saves in goal for Calvin. The Knights outshot Albion 19-7.
