DELAWARE, OH—The men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to host and 15th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan in the championship final of the Fred Meyers Invitational. The only goal of the game came on a penalty kick by Ohio Wesleyan’s Jordan Halloran with just 4:57 left in regulation.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Calvin 12-7.

Sophomore Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) had five saves for the Knights including a key stop on an Ohio Wesleyan breakaway attempt.

Calvin (1-1-0) landed three players on the all-tournament team as senior Luke Holtrop (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS), sophomore Justin Ahearne (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) and junior Dan Kmetz (Strongsville, OH/Strongsville HS) were so honored.

Calvin returns to action next Friday when it hosts 23rd-ranked Wheaton (IL) at 4:00 p.m. on the first day of competition of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Classic.

  • I enjoy reading the well-written and colorful articles about Calvin’s sports teams, and in particular Men’s Soccer.  I suppose it would not come as a surprise that I am a grandparent of a Calvin Knight and am very proud of him.  I also thought it interesting that the Knights’ Fight Song was written by a woman almost 80 years ago(1932). That’s a lengthy record. Could we know more about her?
