The Knights improved their league-best record to 13-3-1 overall and 9-1-1 in conference with a 4-1 dismantling of Trine on Saturday. Trine issued the Knights their lone conference loss earlier in the year, with a 2-0 result in Angola, Indiana.
The Thunder got on the board first when Foster Webb capitalized on a defensive miscue in the 22nd minute. But Calvin responded quickly; in the 24th minute, junior Chris Nance got free on the right flank and worked his way to the top of the 18, where he put a shot on net. Sophomore Zach Willis came streaking onto the shot and redirected it past keeper Nick Thon to equalize for the Knights. The game entered halftime tied at one.
Calvin found some continued offense in the second half when Willis, after receiving the ball from senior Justin Ahearne put a shot towards the far post. Senior Tyler Vegter crashed the post and drilled the ball into the net, giving Calvin its first lead of the match.
Later in the half, freshman Dino Duratovic set up Nance on a vertical through ball. Already past the defense, Nance darted towards net and put a shot past Thon from the top of the 18. Senior Brad Heethuis joined the goal club when, after stumbling over the ball in the box, he directed a shot towards the side netting. From there, Calvin closed out the match with a 4-1 victory.
“After the first 20 minutes our midfield stepped up and outplayed theirs,” said Coach Chris Hughes. “We also got great pressure from the striker line.”
Calvin hosts Albion on Tuesday at 4:00.
