KENOSHA, WI – The top-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team used a pair of second half goals to record a 2-0 victory at Carthage College Wednesday night. The Knights are now 5-0 on the year heading into their final non-conference game – a 3 p.m. tilt at Hiram College (OH) on Saturday.
Calvin held off an upset-minded Carthage team that had handed nationally-ranked Loras College a 2-1 defeat a week before behind a penalty kick by senior Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the 59th minute of play and a scramble goal by senior Brad Heethuis (Jenison/Unity Christian HS) with exactly five minutes left to play.
Carthage (2-3-1 overall) outshot Calvin 15-10 but Calvin goalkeeper Ryan Bratt (Silver Spring, MD/Washington Christian Academy) was up to the task, making four saves to record his third shutout victory of the year.
In the first half, Calvin came close to scoring on two occasions as a header by senior Kyle Billin (Hudsonville/Unity Christian skimmed off the crossbar. Moments later, Heethuis sent a shot just over the net after receiving a pass in the box.
In the second half, Calvin player was pulled down from behind in the box, resulting in a red card for a Carthage player and a penalty kick for Calvin that was taken by Hooker.
Despite trailing 1-0 and playing a man short, Carthage continued to push for the tying goal until Heethuis was able to put the game out of reach with five minutes left to play.
The two teams were credited with six shots apiece in the second half. Calvin also finished the game with an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
