DEFIANCE, OH - The Calvin men’s lacrosse team picked up its first win as a varsity program, edging host Defiance 5-4 Saturday afternoon.
Calvin (1-4) scored a pair of fourth quarter goals to gain the come-from-behind win. Senior Greg Boer (Demotte, IN/Kankakee HS) tied the game at four in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter on a feed from freshman D.J. VanderBaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). With 10:52 remaining, junior Casey Harless (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) scored the game-winner with sophomore Tim Marco (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) drawing the assist on the play.
“We’re thrilled to get our first win as a varsity program,” said Calvin head coach Joel Kamstra. “It’s good to get some affirmation for the work these guys are putting in.”
Calvin took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Marco and sophomore Jonathon VanderLaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with the Marco goal coming in the first quarter and the VanderLaan tally in the second.
Defiance answered with three unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 3-2 halftime lead and then scored midway through the third quarter to build a 4-2 advantage.
VanderBaan then stepped up with an unassisted goal late in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Calvin finished with a 39-17 shots at goal advantage. Boer won 9-of-11 faceoff opportunities while senior Adam Wiersma (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had a team-high 11 ground balls.
Senior Drew Sroczynski (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) had a pair of saves for the Knights.
