HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin men’s lacrosse team traveled to Van Andel Stadium Wed. evening for an MIAA game against rival Hope. The Flying Dutchmen outscored the Knights 7-1 in the first quarter, and coasted to a 20-5 victory.
Calvin was led in scoring by a pair of Grand Rapids Christian graduates. SophomoreTim Marco (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) scored a goal in the third and fourth quarter while sophomore Jonathan VanderLaan (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) scored the game’s final two goals. They came at the 7:14 mark and 6:48 mark of the fourth quarter.
Calvin was outshot 53-19 in the contest including 26-9 in the first half. Calvin senior goalkeeper Drew Sroczynski (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian) was credited with 10 saves.
Calvin’s biggest undoing, perhaps, came in the faceoff circle. The Knights won just three of 28 faceoffs, and did not win their first until midway through the third quarter. Hope outgained Calvin in ground balls, scooping up 51 compared to Calvin’s 25.
Both teams cleared at a decent percentage. Calvin converted 16 of 25 attempts while Hope was 13-17.
Calvin falls to 2-11 on the season and 1-4 in MIAA play. With the loss, Calvin is mathematically eliminated from MIAA Tournament contention. Calvin returns to action Sat., Apr.27, when it hosts the Comets of Olivet College.
