Playing in the first men’s varsity lacrosse MIAA game in Calvin history, the Knights fell to the Bulldogs of Adrian 18-1. While Calvin was able to match the Bulldogs early, the depth of Adrian’s bench became too much as the game progressed.
Adrian scored the first goal of the game just over a minute in while a man up.
The Knights responded quickly as freshman D.J. VanderBaan scored unassisted.
Unfortunately for Calvin, this is the only goal it would score as the Bulldogs played lock-down defense the remainder of the game.
By the end of the first period, Adrian was up 6-1 with Jesse Gilbert and Matt Desveaux each adding a pair of goals.
The Bulldogs would go on to add five goals in the second quarter, two in the third, and five in the fourth to round out the 18-1 victory.
Jake Waldrup scored four goals and added three assists for Adrian, while Matt Desveaux and Jesse Gilbert each added three goals apiece.
Adrian was 19-of-21 on face-offs and outshot the Knights 37-9. Calvin senior goalkeeper Drew Sroczynski made nine saves in the game. The turnover margin was slightly in Adrian’s favor, with the Bulldogs forcing Calvin into 27 while committing 24 of their own.
“I think it’s pretty fitting to come out right away in the first MIAA conference game and play what is considered the top team just to see how we stack up,” said head coach Joel Kamstra. “Going into the rest of conference play, we’re looking to pick up wins, we’re looking to elaborate on what we do in practice and every Saturday we’ll put a better product out there. The guys are buying in and they understand the kind of work that it takes to get to the top level.”
Calvin is now 1-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play while Adrian moves to 6-3 and 1-0 in the MIAA.
The Knights now look forward to next Wednesday when they will continue MIAA play at Albion College. The game against the Britons is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
