CASCADE, MI - The Calvin men’s golf team captured the MIAA NCAA Spring Qualifier Sat. afternoon. The tournament consisted of three rounds, two of which were played at Watermark Country Club. The Knights finished with a three round score of 956, five strokes better than second place finisher Adrian.
Coming into the final round, Calvin had an eight-stroke lead on second place Trine. The Knights shot a team score of 323 on the afternoon, good for third place.
Calvin struggled as a team for most of the day, but did just enough to gain the MIAA’s automatic qualification into the national tournament. Despite the tough conditions, senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) shot the low round of the day (76) and was named the medalist of the round. Senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens) finished in a tie for fifth place with rounds of 79 apiece.
“We were a little disappointed with our scores today, but we are happy to move on and have the opportunity to play at nationals,” said Calvin head coach Brian Bolt. “The MIAA has been tough all year long. Many of the teams are very close. We are honored to represent the MIAA this May.”
Calvin earns its second trip to the national tournament in the last three seasons. The Knights will play for a national championship in Destin, Fla., from May 17-21.
