Men’s Golf Wins MIAA Jamboree Hosted by Hope - Widens Leads in MIAA Overall Standings to 22 Strokes

WEST OLIVE - At the midpoint of the MIAA season, the Calvin men’s golf team has taken a 22-stroke lead for first place in the league standings. The Knights did so with a first place score of 304 strokes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Hope at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club Monday afternooon.
The first place score was 11 strokes better than second place Alma and more importantly 20 strokes ahead of Trine University which trailed Calvin by just two strokes heading into Monday.
Senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) overcame a score of 9 on his third hole of the day to finish the day with a first place of 73. It marks the first time that Sarkipato has claimed medalist honors in his collegiate career.
Junior Mark Allen (Oconomoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) also had a strong afternoon with a round of 75 that was good for a tie for second place individually Monday afternoon.
Senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were next for Calvin with rounds of 78. SophomoreJames Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) added a round of 80 to close out Calvin’s lineup.
Calvin has now taken first place in three consecutive league tournaments. Calvin has two league tournaments yet to play this week as they will play at Trine on Thursday and at Alma on Saturday.
The MIAA regular season consists of eight league tournaments. Calvin is scheduled to host a league tournament next Monday at 1 p.m. at the Watermark Country Club.
