CASCADE - Despite struggling with the elements, the Calvin men’s golf team increased its overall lead in the MIAA spring standings Friday afternoon at the Watermark Country Club. Calvin entered Friday with a seven-stroke lead for first place and concluded the day with an eight-stroke lead despite taking second place in Friday’s NCAA III Spring qualifying tournament with a team score of 329.

Calvin entered with a seven-stroke lead over Hope but now holds an eight-stroke lead over Trine which moved into first place in the overall spring standings with a first place score of 323 on Friday. Calvin will host the final spring qualifier on Saturday with opening tee times set for 10:30 a.m. at the Watermark Country Club.

The team that holds first place in the final overall spring standings which includes three 18-hole MIAA spring qualifier tournaments will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament next month.

Calvin currently sits in first place with a 36-hole total of 633 strokes with Trine second at 641, Adrian third at 645 and Hope fourth att 647.

Friday’s round featured strong winds and soggy playing conditions from the recent stretch of spring rains throughout West Michigan.  Sophomore James VanNoord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) led Calvin with a round of 80 which was good for second place individually.
