CASCADE - With one league tournament left to be played, the MIAA men’s golf race has tightened up. Calvin remains the league leader but rival Hope is now within 15 strokes of the Knights with Trine University 19 strokes behind.
Calvin took third at Monday’s MIAA Jamboree hosted by the Knights at the Watermark Country Club with a team score of 311 strokes. Hope took first place with a team score of 299 with Trine second at 310.
The final MIAA Jamboree of the year is scheduled for October 9 at the Medalist Golf Club with Albion College set to host. The winner of the MIAA fall standings will claim the league’s regular season championship and will also host two of the three 18-hole rounds for the MIAA’s 54-hole spring tournament which determines the automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament.
Senior Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) led Calvin with a round of 75 that was good for a tie for fifth place individually. Junior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore James VanNoord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) had rounds of 77 while senior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Mark Allen (Oconomoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) had rounds of 82.
