PIERSON - The Calvin men’s golf team posted a second place team finish at its own Knight Invite at the Pilgrim’s Run Golf Club Monday afternoon with a team score of 331 strokes. Playing in gale-force wind conditions and at times, driving rain, Calvin finished two strokes behind tournament champion Cornerstone and four strokes ahead of third place Trinity Christian College. The tournament field included 10 teams.

Sophomore Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) led Calvin with an 80 that placed him in a tie for third place individually. Sophomore Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) also cracked the top 10, tying for sixth place individually with a round of 81.

Junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman James Van Noord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) had rounds of 85 while freshman Michael Wierenga (Caledonia/South Christian HS) had an 86.

Competing as individuals for Calvin were sophomore Mark Allen (Oconomoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) with an 82, sophomore Kory Kieffer (Howell/Detroit Catholic Central HS) with an 83, senior Brian Haverdink (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with an 86 and freshman Jonathan Cook (Muskegon/Western Michigan Christian HS) with an 87.

Earning tournament medalist honors was Graham Bennett of Trine with a 77.

Calvin closes out its spring season on April 28 at the Bill Gettig Invitational at Trine University. Prior to that tournament, Calvin will host the Alumni Knight Cup event this Saturday at the Watermark Country Club, featuring current Calvin golfers and alumni men’s golf members.
