Men’s Golf Takes Fourth at MIAA Tournament - Gains Six Strokes on League Leader in Overall Standings

KALAMAZOO - The Calvin men’s golf team inched closer to league-leading Trine University despite finishing fourth at an MIAA tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Milham Park Golf Club. Calvin took fourth at the tournament with a team score of 301 strokes on Tuesday. The Knights are now tied for second place with Olivet and just one stroke ahead of fourth place Hope in the overall standings. The Knights made up six strokes on the league-leading Thunder of Trine however as Trine placed seventh on Tuesday with a team score of 307. Calvin trails Trine by 20 strokes in the overall standings.
Calvin’s top individual finisher on Tuesday was freshman David Veen (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 73 that was good for a tie for fourth place individually. Sophomore Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also played well in his hometown, carding a score of 75 that tied him for 13th place individually. Sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next with a 76 that tied him for 17th place while senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 77 and senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) a 79.
Chris Ansel of Hope was the tournament medalist with a round of 68.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at an MIAA tournament hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee Country Club at 1 p.m.
