Saturday, April 13, 2013
WEST OLIVE – The Calvin men’s golf team vaulted into first place in the MIAA spring standings on Saturday afternoon, firing a first place score of 304 strokes at the first of three 18-hole MIAA spring tournament rounds. Saturday’s tournament round was hosted by Hope at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club. Calvin will host the final two 18-hole rounds next weekend at the Watermark Country Club. The first weekend round will be held on April 19 with the second round set for April 20. Only the top four teams from the MIAA’s fall season standings are competing in the spring tournament. In addition to Calvin and Hope, Adrian and Trine are competing. The team that finishes with the top cumulative 54-hole score at the conclusion of the three MIAA spring tournaments will receive the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
In Saturday’s opening round, Calvin battled through cold nasty weather via the play of seniors Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Sarkipato fired a remarkable one-under round of 70 while Kuiper came up with a round of 75 after recording a 43 on the front nine but then charging back with a 32 on the back nine. The scores by Sarkipato and Kuiper were the top two scores on the afternoon.
Sophomore James VanNoord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) also had a sub-80 score with a 79 while junior Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had an 80 and junior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) had an 83.
Hope took second in Saturday’s competition with a team score of 311 with Adrian third (313) and Trine fourth (318).
