MARSHALL - The Calvin men’s golf team took first place at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club on Wednesday afternoon, posting a team score of 303 strokes. The jamboree was the second of the year on the league schedule.
Calvin finished four strokes ahead of runner-up Trine and seven strokes ahead of third place Hope. After two league jamborees, Calvin is now in third place in the overall MIAA standings with 609 strokes, one stroke behind Olivet (608) and seven strokes behind league-leading Trine (602). Hope is in fourth place with 613 strokes overall.
Sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was the catalyst behind Calvin’s surge on Wednesday with a round of 72 that allowed him to gain a share of medalist honors. Sophomore Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) was close behind with a round of 74 that was good for a tie for fourth place individually. Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 77, senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 80 and freshman Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 84.
Kuiper’s score allowed him to earn medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career. Kuiper is the first Calvin player to earn medalist honors at an MIAA jamboree since 2004 when Jeff TenBrink shared medalist honors at a jamboree hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club.
Calvin returns to play on Saturday when it competes at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Trine at the Zollner Golf Club at 1 p.m.
