Men’s Golf Sixth at MIAA Outing

HOLLAND – Calvin posted a sixth place team score at an MIAA outing hosted by Hope College Monday afternoon at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club but remains in fifth place in the overall team standings.

Calvin took sixth on a rain-soaked course with a team score of 311 strokes. With two league outings left to play, Calvin is 33 strokes ahead of sixth place Kalamazoo in the overall MIAA standings and 25 strokes behind fourth place Albion.

Olivet continues to hold the top spot in the overall standings as the Comets are 33 strokes ahead of defending champion Hope. Olivet added to its lead on Monday with a first place total of 291 strokes, one stroke ahead of Hope. Trine was third on Monday with a score of 297 while Albion was fourth (300) and Adrian fifth (310).

Steve Strock of Hope and Shawn Floyd of Trine shared medalist honors on Monday with rounds of 69.

Junior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was the top finisher for Calvin on Monday with a round of 73 to finish in a tie for 10th place. Next for Calvin was sophomore Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 74. Hendriksma is currently in a three-way tie for 13th place in the overall MIAA individual standings with an average of 77.2 strokes-per-round.

Other finishers for Calvin on Monday were sophomore Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with an 80, junior Aaron Hargett (Lakewood/Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) with an 84 and freshman Brennan Volbeda (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with an 85.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it competes at the Red Poling Classic in Dearborn. Calvin will then host an MIAA outing on Monday, October 6 at the Watermark Country Club.
