Men’s Golf Second at MIAA Jamboree

ADRIAN—The Calvin men’s golf team turned in another solid performance at the third MIAA jamboree of the year and in the process, inched closer to second place in the overall MIAA standings Saturday afternoon at the Lenawee Country Club.

At Saturday’s outing hosted by Adrian College, Calvin posted a second place team score of 304 strokes, just two strokes behind Hope. The Knights also finished six strokes ahead of Adrian and now trail the Bulldogs by just three strokes in the overall team standings. The Knights are also just eight strokes back of league-leading Hope.

Calvin had four golfers fire rounds under 80 on Saturday led by senior Jon Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a round of 74 that was good for fifth place individually. Freshman Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) was close behind with a 75 that was good for a tie for sixth place. Junior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was next with a 76, good for a tie for eighth place while freshman Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 79 that placed him a tie for 21st place individually. Sophomore Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) rounded out Calvin’s finishers with an 87.

Steven Strock of Hope was the tournament medalist with a 71.

Jon Kuiper is currently in second place in the MIAA individual standings with an average of 73.7 strokes per round with Jordan Barber of Adrian leading at 73.3 strokes per round.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it competes at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Kalamazoo College at 1:00 p.m.
