Men’s Golf In 34th Place Through Day One of NCAA III Championships

GREENSBORO, NC - The Calvin men’s golf team is in 34th place through day one of competion at the NCAA III Championships at the Grandover Resort. Calvin posted a first day total of 317 strokes. Oglethorpe (GA) and St. John’s (MN) share the first day team lead at 286 strokes. The top 15 teams at the conclusion of round two will advance to the final two rounds of competition, scheduled for Thursday and Friday respectively. Calvin is one of 40 teams competing at the NCAA III Tournament.
Calvin’s top finisher on Tuesday was senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who fired a five-over par round of 77. Senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomores Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) had rounds of 80. Rounding out Calvin’s finishers was freshman Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with a round of 85.
Calvin competed on the East Course of the Grandover Resort on Tuesday and will switch to the West Course on Wednesday.
Craig Stevenson of Oglethorpe had the top individual score on Tuesday with a six-under round of 66.
Calvin is scheduled to tee off on Wednesday at 11:10 a.m. with Skidmore College and Texas Lutheran.
Texas Lutheran is currently in fifth place through day one with a team score of 292 strokes. Skidmore is tied for 26th with a team score of 308.
Guilford College and the Greensboro Sports Commission serve as co-hosts of this year’s national championship, which is being held at Grandover for the first time. Methodist University is the defending tournament champion after edging Guilford by one stroke for the 2010 championship in Hershey, Pa.
